Daniel's Valentines
The world lost a hero on April 12, but heaven gained an angel.

We shared Daniel Kerner’s inspiring story with you in the winter edition of Believe. On April 12, Daniel passed away in his sister’s arms, ending his lifelong battle with late infantile Batten disease. He was 10 years old.

Daniel’s death hit me especially hard. I have had an enormous amount of admiration and respect for the Kerners since I first heard their story nearly four years ago, and writing the article on Daniel at the beginning of this year carved out an even deeper place in my heart for him and his family.

There are no words to describe the loss of a child. And as deeply as Daniel’s death has affected me personally, I cannot escape that while his story is unique – as is every child’s – the ending is not. Batten disease is universally fatal and will continue to be so until research produces a cure. The fact that we could not find an answer for Batten disease in time to save Daniel’s life serves as a stark reminder of the many children who continue to battle this cruel disease. The road that lies ahead for all of these children is difficult, but by supporting the fight for a cure – through your generous gifts of time and dollars and your efforts to help us spread the word - you can help ensure that one day soon, stories like Daniel’s will have a happy ending.
