John and I took T to build a new teddy bear at the Build-A-Bear workshop today.
"Anna" came home in a one-piece bathing suit with cherries on it, matching red and green bows and sunglasses. The
afternoon, which wouldn't have been terribly out-of-the-ordinary otherwise, brought back memories of that fateful day
nearly ten months ago: July 24, 2006. On that day, after gathering ourselves out in the parking lot--we'd received T's
awful diagnosis just a few hours prior--we picked her up from therapy and drove to Concord Mills, where she and
I built matching cheerleader bears (ingeniously named Cheerleader Bear and Cheerleader Bear 2.0). If you've ever
been to the store, you know that before they sew your bear up, you're asked to make a wish on its tiny heart. You can
imagine what my wish was that day...and probably wouldn't be shocked to learn that I repeated that wish today.
